Pingvellir (pronounced Thingveddler), is a broad and beautiful valley of crumpled lava flows, rocky fissures and waterfalls which lies about 20 miles east of Reykjavik. We plan to visit the area on our first full day in Iceland . As well as being a fascinating area from the geographical point of view, it is also Iceland's most important historical site. The first Icelandic parliament (called the Alping - pronounced Althing!) convened here in AD930. In 1928 the Icelandic government set the area aside as the country's first national park.
