The modern republic of Iceland has only been in existence since 1944 and has much to do with events of the Second World War. Before the war, Iceland had been under Danish control but once the Germans occupied Denmark, the Danes had more to do than oversee Iceland. The Allies realised that if the Germans occupied Iceland too, then Britain was going to be very vulnerable. So they sent the troops in - first the British and then the Americans!
On the 8th May 1940, two cruisers, two destroyers and 815 officers and men sailed from Greenock (near Glasgow). They entered Reykjavik Bay on 10th May and took control of strategic positions there......... the rest , as they say, is history and you can read about it by clicking on this link.
