You will see a lot of horses in Iceland! Technically. their size means that they are ponies but their breed name is the Icelandic Horse. There are around 100,000 in all which, for a population of 290,000, is a lot of pony per person.

One of the distinguishing features of the Icelandic Horse is that they have extra 'gaits'. As well as the walk, trot and canter, they also have gaits called the 'tolt' and the 'skeid' (pace) which are very distinctive and quite unlike the way horses and ponies move in this country.
